Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
